Holmes,R. 1961 27. Journal 1 July Wales → Kotzebue, Alaska From The base / The hill, a slope rises up at a 400 c. The terrain changes into one of a "bumpy" nature - where the rocky ground is covered with a good layer (sod, grass + herbs). Erosion has resulted in making drainage troughs + channels thereby making the ground "rough + bumpy"). The only birds seen in this area were Western Sandpipers + Alaska longspurs? Further up the slope, There is a bench - wall - flat - shelf - where these same birds occur & where phleomenia is first encountered. In the areas above this shelf, the ground is rocky, lichen covered, with only occasional patches of grass or grassy swales. Patches / Ranunculus from here there as do phlox + other herbs. In this high region, snow buntings, water pipits, bairdi, + phleomenia are found. Bairdi seems to be associated with Dr Shale - like areas ~ the E. side of the ridge. Phleomenia is found where the rocky hillsides where are often steep meet a patch (grass). If the swale is large enough, western
