Holmes,R. 1961 Journal 24. 30 June Wales, Alaska Saw several sporting raptors. These are described by De matrix as summer vultures (previously Calif. Grey Whales). 1 July Wales, Alaska -> Kotzebue, Alaska Sullivan & I re-climbed De mountain during the morning looking for pheasants. He saw none but collected a Bairdi. I saw 2 at the base of a rocky cliff where it meets a grassy bench - One bird (collected) gone ~ mouse run. The other bird was seen several minutes later in the same area but could not be collected. A ?snowyowl was seen about halfway up Village Creek Canyon & 1 was seen at the mouth of the canyon. A fox (red?) was seen in the upper parts of the canyon, 1 snipe was collected at the southern mountain to the canyon. It was in this area that Sevuk collected De Rufous- necked Sandpipers several years ago. I was taken to the grassy field at the east side of the canyon opening. We were taken to the more rocky hillside on the west side of the ravine. The meats were a ? insects in both cases - in this drear habitat.
