29 June Barrow → Wales, Alaska
Deering. Some small shrubby willows were
seen in the stream beds - but only in localized
patches? No sign of animal life seen. 1900 - moved
into hilly country where the hills were capped
with a volcanic (?) - like rock. I presume.
The hill sides - were pole-marked with sunlights,
probably formed by drainage pattern ???.
There were patches of tussock tundra on the
lower ridges. I Snow Owl seen.
1935 - crossing Mint River, just above its
fork. The weather up to this point has
been good. The arctic slope was clear &
sunny; the x-ing on the western edge (the
Brooks) was cloudy & foggy; Kotubutu was
warm - with mosquitoes - slight wind. The
Seward Peninsula has had a putty arrival,
but now nearing Wales, a dark cloud
is being approached. - in the vicinity of Cape Prince.
1945 - Flying along the east shore of Lopp
Lagoon. The Diomedes (probably big & little) &
Fairway Rock can be seen. 2000 -
Arrived at Wales (met Tevoka at the
landing place (on the shore), he seemed
extremely well versed in local identification,
knowing all (the English names).
