Holmes,R, 1961 Journal 23 June Barrow, Alaska Morning spent working up insect samples. In the afternoon, Bohnsack & I went out to his sampling plot and took samples with the new vacuum net. The net seems quite effective in picking up surface forms—but debris is also collected and a Berlese apparatus must be used in order to separate the materials. The sampling procedure used was to hold the net down for ~30 sec at each spot. Two silver settings were taken at the top of a polygon—at random—this was done on 5 polygons—sp.—total 1/10 sq.ft. sampled. This procedure was repeated in the troughs & on the slope. The vacuum net will not work over water, since the water itself is also sucked up. The seagrass was there during the early afternoon—wherewere we used as a standard. In the evening, samples were sorted at the Berlese’s even put into operation. The weather today was overcast, cold & windy (20–30 mph from the N.E). 24 June Barrow, Alaska Fuller & I went to the area below (probably) L. Otokipik
