Holmes,R. 1961 Journal 11 June Barrow, Alaska A chick - aquatic invertebrates. In the ponds & pond margins permanent marsh area, swampl eggs? & chironomid larvae were found. Phalaropes & perhaps a few Pectorals were the only birds found here. The chironomids are along the surface (the near- under 4-6"? water). They may be picked up with a fine mesh aquatic net. In the afternoon, I censused Pt. Kelka's plot along the beach ridge. There were 6 decided flock of birds. Longspurs & Pintails were common, but very few red-necked phalaropes were seen. - Six census check. The weather today has remained (warm) & sunny - but a cool wind picked up early. The entire ridge top (plot area) is per? snow & most? The blue ice west to Elson - is almost clear. Central area is perhaps 70% clear, the same standard water but not so that the green is covered. The sloughs are pouring water out to the sea or lagoons & small streams are encountered wherever. There is a slope. The tundra appears now - like 25-28 June 1 last year 1 The year before. The birds are now laying eggs (Longspurs, Pintails, redbills, etc.)
