Holmes, R. 1960 Journal 18 Aug Barrow, Alaska During the remainder of the day we creuded among the ice floes and did not see any more walrus. Several bearded seals (Erignathus barbatus) were seen & shot at. One was killed & sunk. Two - Three Pingid seals [illegible] were also seen & our own shot & taken aboard. We arrived back at the base at 2030. The crew of the boat were relatively young. There were 2 older men, however. The method of shooting used by these people seemed to be rather wasteful. The idea of shooting into a herd seems to lead to a condition where there are lots of injured walrus & very few dead ones. At the time of shooting everyone seems to be so excited that no one has control & thus more - wild shooting takes place. Many of the animals are wounded - at least internally & many will probably die soon later. On the way is about a minke, a [illegible], and another Grey whale was seen.
