18 Aug Barrow, Alaska
During the remainder of the day we
creuded among the ice floes and
did not see any more walrus.
Several bearded seals (Erignathus
barbatus) were seen & shot at. One
was killed & sunk. Two - Three
Pingid seals [illegible] were also seen &
our own shot & taken aboard. We
arrived back at the base at 2030.
The crew of the boat were relatively
young. There were 2 older men, however.
The method of shooting used
by these people seemed to be rather
wasteful. The idea of shooting into
a herd seems to lead to a condition
where there are lots of injured
walrus & very few dead ones. At
the time of shooting everyone seems
to be so excited that no one has
control & thus more - wild shooting
takes place. Many of the animals
are wounded - at least internally &
many will probably die soon
later.
On the way is about a minke, a
[illegible], and another Grey whale was
seen.
