18 Aug Barrow, Alaska
we landed where the [animal]
[illegible] killed & the eskimo
proceeded to butcher the animal. First
The head was cut off, The The skin
& fluffies on the sides, the last
hind limbs, & finally the ribcage.
This act took about 15 minutes.
The meat was loaded aboard
in the middle of the boat - so that
when we returned Murray, we
could not stand or top the
mass. About 45 minutes later,
another group of 4 or 5 was spotted.
Upon our approach they turned & slid
into the water. One, however, was
slowed down by numerous shots &
was almost dead. When he
slipped off the ice. It apparently
sank immediately, for it was not
seen again. Two of the other were
chased & both were killed & the
harpooned. After dragging them to
the ice and after hooking rope
around their heads, they were pulled
& then came out at the ice.
The eskimos then proceeded to cut them
up again.
