58. Holmes.R. 1960 Journal 18 Aug Barrow, Alaska we landed where the [animal] [illegible] killed & the eskimo proceeded to butcher the animal. First The head was cut off, The The skin & fluffies on the sides, the last hind limbs, & finally the ribcage. This act took about 15 minutes. The meat was loaded aboard in the middle of the boat - so that when we returned Murray, we could not stand or top the mass. About 45 minutes later, another group of 4 or 5 was spotted. Upon our approach they turned & slid into the water. One, however, was slowed down by numerous shots & was almost dead. When he slipped off the ice. It apparently sank immediately, for it was not seen again. Two of the other were chased & both were killed & the harpooned. After dragging them to the ice and after hooking rope around their heads, they were pulled & then came out at the ice. The eskimos then proceeded to cut them up again.
