31 July Barrow, Alaska
Island which has a steep like
— and is about 4 mile in length.
This island was not landed at
this time. But it was visited
on the 24th. There were very few birds
there at that time (Thousand was
quite low & flat with very little
driftwood). Deadman's Island
is the next in the series, and this
one is about a mile long. It
has higher places where there are
scattered pieces of driftwood & birds
are found nesting here. When Tapkalku
was visited today, it turned out to
be a very low sandy island
with very little nesting locales
for birds & consequently there were
no birds nesting there. A few
terns & solvin gulls were seen
there, but then were apparent
wanderers. The island is hard to
land on because of several
shoals & shallower waters in
the Southside of the island. Looked
down the island to the east, and
it's the Tapkalku Island appears
to be higher, but they are not visited
