23 July Barrow = Meade River, Alaska
Started another gorge watch in the morning (8.612). In the afternoon Warner Dougdale (Limnologist - U. P. Aiburg) flew to The Meade River Coal Mine, 78mi S. of Barrow. The tundra at M.R.
was extremely different from that at
Barrow. This consisted of tussock-type
Tundra with many grasses & flowering
herbs. Erigophorum was in full
bloom and covered the slopes
of the rolling hills. The bird
life there was quite poor, and
most of the breeding birds had
apparently departed. One 9 Pectoral
Sandpiper with flying young, 14
Ptarmigan (Willow) with large brood(5)
and 1 Sh.-e. Owl with 2
chicks were not found.
Longspurs were common, and a
Less snow bunting was seen.
A herd of approximately 200
Caribou, now, or about 2 miles
west of the village (MR). We arrived
back at Barrow at 1930 after
2 1/2 hours on the ground at the
Mine. At 2000, I went look on
the frozen lode two-released at 2400.
