10 June Barrow, Alaska
melt-off seems to have slowed down. The cover now is approximately 70-80% snow. However, with the warm evening today, the melt-off should increase in rate.
11 June Barrow, Alaska
The weather has again turned cool, but the rate of increase of melt-off is noticeable. Several ponds/ lakes are now seen— frost lake + more if central marsh is exposed. The morning was spent walking along the beach ridge from the magnetic station to the gas line. Bird activity was low. Part of the afternoon was spent at a lot & the remainder on the beach ridge near the gas line.
12 June Barrow, Alaska
The morning was spent on the beach ridge collecting lemmings. An area 300' x 210' covered with 60% snow + 10% water yielded 130 animals. It was estimated that about 60% were removed, so the population was even higher. In the afternoon, I began setting out my study plot on the west shore of Skersaute and also several nests were checked. Lemmings
