Holms,R 1960 Journal 3 june Barrow, Alaska animals are rarely seen out in the centre these patches, except when there in dime, usually cat, grass where the animals have some protection. Most of the animals seen now are along the edge. The snow seldom venture out for from the area. Occas- ionally, individuals will be seen running across large areas of snow or tundra. After having watched the lemming feed now for about while, I have come to the conclusion that they are primarily after the rhizom & roots (the grasses). Very seldom will they take whole of the grass. They will work at and work hard trying to pull a root out of the ground. In the afternoon, The drum area was checked & very little lemming, activity was found (but much lemming sign). The area is marked with dog footprints, so they have reduced the population considerably in the area. A few stone birds are shown up here. Semi-pole were displaying and a bands were seen.
