30 may Barrow, Alaska
Spent the day working in the labyrince
of the poor weather conditions &
bad transportation. In the evening,
I went over to Voth's Area, Village
slough & vicinity. Lemmings were in
active movement and 30 were collected
near Voth's Area in less than half
an hour. No owls were seen in this
region again, but jaegers were
plentiful. Also no shortbats were
present.
31 may Barrow, Alaska
The morning was spent along the beach
ridge, Wipbackloz Slough, Dypik
Slough & Central Marsh. Lemming
numbers remain high with a count of
46 animals feeding in an exposed
area 17 15x35 feet. Similar
estimate from other areas were
obtained. It was noted several
times that the jaegers were sitting
in a piece of tundra + lemming
would be running back and forth
in front of them; the birds apparently
have enough food & have no
interest in these animals.
