Holmes, R. 1960 Journal 4. 30 may Barrow, Alaska Spent the day working in the labyrince of the poor weather conditions & bad transportation. In the evening, I went over to Voth's Area, Village slough & vicinity. Lemmings were in active movement and 30 were collected near Voth's Area in less than half an hour. No owls were seen in this region again, but jaegers were plentiful. Also no shortbats were present. 31 may Barrow, Alaska The morning was spent along the beach ridge, Wipbackloz Slough, Dypik Slough & Central Marsh. Lemming numbers remain high with a count of 46 animals feeding in an exposed area 17 15x35 feet. Similar estimate from other areas were obtained. It was noted several times that the jaegers were sitting in a piece of tundra + lemming would be running back and forth in front of them; the birds apparently have enough food & have no interest in these animals.
