2.
28 may. Barrow, Alaska
Also underneath this matted grass were
numerous lemming droppings; wherever
the grass was scraped these pellets could
be seen.
The presence of birds was not particularly
good. One Snowy Owl was seen also
on the ridge, just east of the Beverage antenna.
Numerous Pomarine Jaegers were seen, but
combat was not observed. Several (or
3 or 4) birds would be flying together.
Claustrous Auks were seen in small
numbers; all were flying high. Sword
Banks and Alaska Longspurs were both
singing. No shorebirds were seen, but 2
Dunlin were noted on the 25th near
Voth's Area by Maher.
In the evening the eastern end of the
break ridge + Woblochog's Slough was
checked. Wherever the tundra was
exposed, the grass had been clipped,
and lemmings could be seen moving back
and forth across these patches.
Pomarine Jaegers were noted quite
commonly throughout the area (about
20/5qmi - estimate). Several water
establishment were noted
+ displays were seen twice.
