28 may Barrow, Alaska
Arrived at Barrow via LIder Airline at
1030. Spent the afternoon walking out to the
beach ridge and look to base. The snow
conditions here are as follows. It
seems that the state [melt off its]
[late] Than it was on 4 June /
last year. The beach ridge is
partially exposed along the top, and
relatively large patches are present
in the drum area. The most
amazing thing is the presence of
many Lemming. During the 3½ hour
walk, an estimated 100 Lemmings were
seen; five were collected. Upon approaching
a large open area, usually 6-7
animals could be seen out in the gap,
feeding on the vegetation. As soon as I
approached too close, they would all
scurry to the edge of the snow. The
condition [the vegetation] was especially
noted. There is hardly a block of grass
or stroke / sledge that does not bear
[illegible]. One can run his hood across
the vegetation and take away all these animals.
This condition exists at a
polygynous area as well as in the tundra
(as well as they could be checked).
