Thick-billed Murre
Uria lomvia
Sep.18 Monterey area, Monterey Co. Calif : 3. Two at Coast Guard
Pier and one at Otter Point, Pacific Grove. One had been
found here about 5 days ago by Alan Baldridge at the sea
side of the pier. We found a bird there in about 10
seconds about 100 feet off the pier and was studied at
leisure through scopes and photographed. Then we located
another bird off Otter Point about 500 yds. out but still
obvious, especially when compared to a breeding plumage
Common Murre at the same distance. Then we returned to
the Coast Guard Pier and found two birds, not just one,
and the famous Charlie Clark from Chicago looking at them
for a life. All three birds had very dark heads with a
touch of paleness on the cheeks. The two close birds had
very downcurved upper mandibles and the Otter Pt bird had
a short, thick bill but the downcurvature couldn't be seen.
The best mark seemed to be the angle of the bill - pointed
upwards in C-Murre, held horizontally by T-b Murre. Two
of the birds were photographed, one with a C. Murre in
field.
Sep.22 Monterey area: same 3 Murres in same spots ~~ at
least one seen by all, including Alan Baldridge, John
Luther, Dave DeSante, et.al.
Sep.27 Monterey area : 1 at Otter Pt. Neither Coast Guard Pier
could be located
Oct.7 Monterey area: 2 birds at Coast Guard Pier approached
by boat to within 20' - they both had white gape
marks which had been previously invisible on one and nearly
so on the other
