Sep.29 Eureka area, Humboldt Co., Calif: 2 on Arcata sewage ponds: black nape and hindcrown and face behind eye, underparts white, bill black, mantle+wings gray, black and white wing tips. One bird was considerably mottled with brown on upperparts. My first observation in Calif.
