Upperside of tail: dark centers, light sides. (like Pectoral)
Underside of tail: not seen
Leg: - greenish yellow. Could see no difference between this color and that of some Pectorals.
Behavior: Standing on dusty dirt dille bordering one of the ponds as if it were going to roost there with 30 Pectorals and 150 Least + Western Sandpipers. Flushed to mudflat where it perched on top of a dead weed clump.
Voice: Not heard
Habitat: drying settling pond in agricultural area.
How identification was decided - elimination of similar species:
Not a Pectoral because
1) Breast nearly completely unstreaked - bright buffy. The only streaks were on extremely narrow band which formed a type of collar.
2) face and head pattern very strikingly different - very white cheeks and eyebrow -- different face pattern
(drawing: red with streak, brownish eyeline, white face and eyes, faint orange streeks, solid bright buffy, white)
3) orange in primaries
4) red cap is apparently not diagnostic - we saw Pectorals with very red caps. But the sharpness with which it contrasts with very broad light eyebrow is probably diagnostic.
Not a Reeve or Buff-breasted because
1) red cap
2) body shape like Pectoral - squatty and short-legged not erect and long-legged
3) V- pattern on back like Pectoral -- not scaly like Reeve or Buffie.
4) no eye-ring like Buffie. Legs not bright orange-yellow like Buffie
5) no broad white patches on upper-tail coverts like Ruff
What amazed me how was how obvious this bird was - it really was strikingly different at 100 yds.
Prior experience with this species and similar species: One adult in breeding plumage at Barrow, Alaska G-11-72
