Remsen, J.V. 1973 Turkey Meleagris gallopavo July 11 Castro Valley Ranch, Gilroy, Santa Clara Co., Calif.: 820, 74F. Bruce G. Elliott, Area Unit Manager for Calif. Dept. Fish Game, took Bill Principe and T to this 4000 acre ranch in the mountains w. of Gilroy, where 30 birds had been released 35 years ago and had now increased to 300. At about 1000 hrs we found the males grazing on a field near the main ranch buildings where sprinklers had probably softened the ground. They were quite tame as long as we stayed in the car. I had only seen them once previously (1967 in Colorado) and had forgotten how enormous they were. Most were molting but were still impressive in their plumage iridescence. We got as close as 100 ft and within 50 feet of a flock of females also near the main ranch buildings.
