Remsen, J.V. 1973 Black-bellied Tree Duck Pseudochenya autumnalis Oct.20 South end Salton Sea, Imperial Co., Calif.: 2 at Water Unit. Found there on Oct.16 by state game & fish personnel. I got a number of pictures from which the birds should be readily identifiable (thus no description here). Besides some old specimens, only one other sight record exists for Calif. The birds were incredibly beautiful. When I woke up in the morning, and sat up in my sleeping bag, I saw two suspicious ducks in the air 1/4 mile away. With my binoculars I could see the huge white wing stripe and dark underparts as they circled the marsh and landed. Later we got much better looks at them but payed for it with an incredible number of mosquito bites.
