New Zealand Shearwater
Puffinus bulleri
Sep.15 San Diego offshore boat trip: 2 Very rare this far south. Seen by all on board, including McCaskie, Stallcup.
White underparts including very white underwings; dark upperparts except for large white areas in wings. Sharp division between dark and light body areas. Size of Sooty Shearwater, but wings more even width - not as sharply tapering.
Sep.22 Monterey Bay boat trip: 10 in two flocks of 5. They keep the wings arched like a spotted Sandpiper and probably do more gliding and less flapping than any other shearwater. Underwings whiter than any other shearwater.
Sep.30 Eureka boat trip: 5
Oct.6 Monterey Bay boat trip: 3
