msen, J.V. 1973 Eared Grebe Podiceps caspicus July 8 Woodland Sugar Ponds, Yolo Co, Calif : 5 breed plum. July 14 Boca Dam, Nevada Co, Calif : 4 breed plum. Woodland Sugar Ponds : 1 breed plum. July 21 Whitewater Rivermouth, Salton Sea, Riverside Co, Calif : 50, including one nearly complete albino South end Salton Sea, Imperial Co, Calif : 50 July 22 Salton City, Imperial Co, Calif : 29 Aug. 31 Woodland Sugar Ponds : 5 non-breed plum Sep. 7 Mono Lake, Mono Co, Calif : incredibly abundant, with a minimum average density of one bird per 50' x 50' to give an abundance estimate of (for the 28 square miles which we could see) of 312,238 birds. Mono Lake actually is about 100 square miles and if the density was the same over all of the lake, this would up the estimate to 1,125,000. The density seemed to be even as far as we could see and so 1 million is probably a fair estimate. One bird per 2500 sq ft. is also very conservative - for much of the lake, 1 bird per 10'x 10' or 100 sq ft would be more accurate. This is the most incredible concentration of waterbirds I've ever seen - it really has to be seen to be believed Sep. 13 Deep Springs Ranch, Inyo Co, Calif : 6 Sep. 14 North end Salton Sea, Riverside Co, Calif : 50 Sep. 18 Monterey area Moss Landing, Monterey Co, Calif : 5 Sep. 23 Moss Landing : 2 Sept. 27 Monterey area, Monterey Co, Calif : 1 Crespi Pond Oct. 7 Monterey boat trip, Monterey Co, Calif : 1 on ocean 5-10 miles W. of Pt.
