Remsen, J.V. 1973 Ancient Murrelet Synthliboramphus antiquum Aug. 5 Bodega Harbor, Sonoma Co., Calif: 1 in the channel joining the bay and the harbor. We couldn't believe it when we pulled up at the end of the bay road near the jetty and saw a beautiful Ancient Murrelet in the channel in front of us not more than 50 yds. away. All field marks for winter bird: white sides, breast, throat with dark projection from shoulder into breast, all dark wings, back, crown, and face (below eye); white extended up through neck to nape. Bill definitely yellowish and thick and short - tangara-like. Trace of striping on back which is found in breeding plumage. First August record for California?
