Remsen, J.V. 1973 Great-tailed Grackle July 21 Ramer Lalle, Imperial Co, Calif: 1 ♂ July 22 [Imperial] Dam, Imperial Co, Calif: 10, both in rows of palms along highway below dam and in the park on the west side of the dam. There was a nest with young in one of the palm trees (25' up) in this park. I was really impressed with the size of the male's bill and tale. Varied vocabulary, but two distinctive calls were (1) a "chup-chup-chup," the "zee" being very much higher and very metallic. (2) a chak-cha rolling trill somewhat like Gila Woodpecker. The regular call note seemed to be higher pitched than Yellow-headed Blackbird - thus not nearly so deep as to be proportional to body size
