Upside of tail:
Underside of tail: Not seen
Legs: dark? Cant really remember.
Behavior: Stalking on ground under a closely trimmed hedge. Flushed and flew a few feet and then disappeared in shrubrow again. Flushed once more and it landed on exposed palm frond 20' up and remained motionless for 30 seconds before disappearing again for good
Voice: Silent
Habitat: Oasis of Chinese elms, launs, hedges in middle of high desert.
How identification was decided - elimination of similar species:
Not a Hylocichla because
1. too small
2. breast spots much too large and well defined - not messy like a Thrush
3. Undercolor of underparts immaculate white - no brown smudging
Not a waterthrush because:
1. no strong eyeline
2. waterthrush lacks strong, complete eye-ring.
3. waterthrush breast markings are more streak-like - not well defined spots.
Diagnostic character
- I know of no other species of similar type bird with a rusty orange crown.
Prior experience with this species and similar species: Once in Calif. 5-26-73 at Oasis, Mono Co.
