RIBBLE, D.O. 1986 Journal 19 Hastings Reservation, Monterey Co., CA. June 25 Clear, calm, and cool overnight. Low 50's this morning. Ground dry. Moon about 3/4 full, rises around @ 0100-0200 hrs. Started today at 0530hrs. Trapline St. No. SPP. Sex, Age, Body VI 1 (ink) 724 P. truei ♀, late sub, vulva slightly open, nulliparous 5 (open) 727 P. truei ♀, early sub, nonbreeding 6 (open) 728 P. truei ♀, adult, post-lactating, vulva closed 8 (open) 729 P. truei ♀, adult, post lactating - Right ear has large rip 8 (int) 730 P. truei ♂♂, early adult, nonbreeding. 9 (int) 731 P. truei, ♂?, adult, nonbreeding. Testes slightly swollen. Finished this trapline by 0610 and loaded for Madrona Canyon. 3 of 4 snap traps had animals, and all were caught by their rear legs and still alive. I killed those since they had no way of making it. Location: Madrona Canyon, ~ 1/2 mile past upper shack. Riparian veg. NE #724 P. californicus ♂?, mature, nonbreeding - Caught by left rear leg. #725 P. boylii ♀, mature, no visible breeding signs - Caught by right rear leg. #726 P. californicus ♂?, immature. ID on relative size & tail shape. Caught by 130-72-22-18.5 tail and left rear leg. Data for Grid MC-1 was recorded on accompanying data sheets. To summarize: P. californicus: total captures: 19 (1 escaped untagged) 9♂, 9♀ recaptures: 12 new animals: 6 P. boylii total captures 16 (1 previously tagged animal escaped) 5♂ recaptures: 6 (+1) new animals: 9 N. fuscipes 3 new animals, 3♀ While handling Neotoma at 8,5. A Cooper Hawk flew up and perched about 10-15m away up in a willow (?) oak. It was probably attracted by the "squeal" of throat. After 2-3 min, it clumsily flew away, bashing through the trees.
