RIBBLE, D.O. 1986 Journal 17 Hastings Reservation, Monterey Co., C.A. June 23) I finished checking traps by 0700hrs. I loaded everything up, and left for Berkeley by 0800h. A successful week! Max temp: 72 Min temp: 42 June 23 Arrived at Hastings around 1500hr. This afternoon - Skies are clear, slight breeze, and very warm (low 90's). Began by setting up a grid near Madrone Canyon (same spot as Trapline I, see diagram below for corresponding stations). The grid axes are the following 230°--50°, with 10m between each station. I finished setting out stations at 1830, I got 21 stations done. Finish tomorrow. The south slope grades unto a "manginita" patch starting about 30-40m from the stream. The purpose of this trip is to trap Peromyscus californicus. I will be here until July 4. Max temp: 91 Min temp: 54 June 24. I spent the morning finishing up the grid. I decided to stay with 5 stations across the canyon, I can always add more. Several Notoma maddens were discovered on the south side of the canyon (see map for locations). I numbered the stakes so that more can be added without renumbering. In the afternoon I set out 3 traps per station, baited w/ rolled oats & some residual seed mixture left over. This task took about 3½ hrs, finished 1630hrs. Another cloudless, warm day (mid 90's), with slight breeze. I next set up a transect in the chamise behind the red house.-Trapline VI. Set out 10 stations, 10-15m between stations, 2 traps per station, 1 placed in open & one placed under chamise or buckbrush. Baited with "cob" (from P. Kelley), mixture of oats, barley, corn, & molasses. Finally, I set 4 museum snap traps about 108m from the grid in Madrone Canyon to collect Peromyscus for stomach analysis. Max temp: 92 Min temp: 55
