Hastings Reservation, Monterey Co, CA.
June 7 (m) 1905-1906 (II-1). This escape site was under a large rock (~50 cm
across)
supported above the ground by surrounding smaller rocks. I lifted the
large rock underneath was covered with acorn shells & caps. No
animals were seen.
1930:1931 (II-2). This escape site was located on a steep slope, 4m high, coming
straight from the stream side. It is covered with moss, ferns, blackberry,
and other wise herbs. I dug out this system with my hands. The
soil is very loosely packed and can be dug out easily. The passage
system looked something like this (looking at side of slope)
I found a kept a buckeye stood in a blind tunnel. It looks like it has teeth
marks. Acorn shells (5) were also found. No clear signs of any
nesting places were found. The slope is covered with numerous other holes,
but I don't want to destroy the slope.
1933 (II-3) This escape site is under an old decayed log (~30 cm across).
1933 was under it and scurried away when I lifted the log. This
is the least spectacular of sites seen - only a few passageways under
the log in the timber.
Finished the afternoon by resetting all traps on Trapline II.
Later that night, I checked traps on Trapline II to see how early
these animals are coming out. Unfortunately, I only got through
part of station 5 and my flashlight quit working - I returned
home, leaving traps closed at the stations I checked. It was
clear, no moon, and in the low 40's.
