Hastings Reservation, Monterey Co., CA.
June (tent) I failed to measure some of the last captures because of the length
of time it was taking to check all traps. It finished around 1130.
The sun burned the clouds off earlier, around 0930. The wind
is gusting up to 20mph, and it is fairly cool (upper 70s).
After lunch, I investigated refuge sites #3..the # indicated the animal sometime
1964(station II-2).The hole started about 1m from the uphill end of a log. I turned
over the log and found a crude system of passageways winding under the log
through leaf litter, rocks, and bark. Not much digging would be required
to maintain this system. A few acorn shells were found. At the furthest
uphill point 2 rocks, each about 180mm across formed a
crevice. When I pulled these over, 1964 was sitting in a core formed
between the rocks & the uphill slope. It is drier than the rest of
the system and contains acorn shells, and some small seeds. 1964
turned away. Area covered w/ poison oak, "aspen"-like plant. Canopy
is oak

1965 (Station II-2). This escape site was among a group of rocks
and litter. The largest rock was about 35cm across. Underneath
of the rocks
and to the sides was a system of passageways. No animal appeared,
but I did find acorn shells & a pile of 10-15 seeds from the bait
mix used in the traps. This shelter was about 12m from the stream on
a slope of about 30%.
