Transect X, Robertson Creek Canyon Notes on P.californicus: californicus is the most docile & easiest to handle of all the Peromyscus. Rarely does it escape swiftly, rather it usually ambles off. It's not very agile, and although it will climb, it is clumsy. Two morphological features distinguish these animals. 1- hind foot almost always ~25 mm in adult animals & close to 25 in immatures. 2- white tail tip, which is most numerous in Madrone Canyon.
