Russell Reservation, Contra Costa Co., CA
July (12 local) facing slopes ( Baccharis spp), and various combinations of
chaparral & woodland mix. The valley floor consists of pine
trees planted for genetic studies. Today was clear and
warm (upper 80s) with a slight breeze.
We set up 5 traplines, 10 stations at each, 2 traps/station, 10-15m between
stations, baited w/ rolled oats.
Trapline I - 300m N/W of the observatory. Bay-Oak woodland
bordered by grassland and soft chaparral. Slope faces to
the southwest. Not much ground cover vegetation and fairly
sparse. Found a few Neotoma midden plus scat.
Trapline II - starts at end of valley road and heads up north
east
on south facing arroyo. Chaparral dominated by Baccharis
and Salvia spp, with one Quercus. The transect runs up for 8
stations and #9 & 10 are at the bottom.
Trapline III - start at east end of valley road and continues east
up the arroyo. Oak-Bay woodland w/ dense floor cover of
Rubes, poison oak and blackberry. Very sparse. Traps
run up the arroyo for 8 stations and cuts back to the the
southwest along the arroyo slope.
Trapline IV - Starts ~0.4 mi east of office on south side of
valley floor in chaparral oak woodland. Runs along
the edge of the chaparral-pine edge and then goes up into
(U-1)
the chaparral. The chaparral is very dense with Baccharis,
some bay trees, poison oak, and wild rose.
Trapline V - starts same place as IV, but runs up through
chaparral to grassland-chaparral edge & follows along
edge the last 5 stations.
Finished setting traps by 61700h (Pacific daylight savings time)
