JOURNAL
24
Hastings Reservation, Monterey Co., CA.
June 28 (continuation of night trapcheck)
0035h- Dusted 1935 (♀) with LIME GREEN at station 7,12. The bag
is not very full, so I "shake & baked" this animal with moderate
success(hard to get back covered). However, the lime green color
is worthless- it is not obvious on the animal and doesn't leave a
distinct trail. Don't use this color.
0100- By this time the rechargeable batteries ran out of juice (lasted ~3km).
Also, it seems like there is less audible activity by small mammals. I'm
not sure about this.
0115- Dusted 1939 (♀) with RED at station 7,12. I held her behind
the head and stuck the posterior part of her body in the bag. This seems
to work well. She escaped up & into a hollow tree stump about 1.5m
above ground level - flagged it. RED appears deep orange.
Finished checking all traps at 0150h. The moon (1/2 full) is rising.
Summary of Trap Results:
P. californicus- 18 total (9♂,9♀), 1 new, 17 recaptures
P. boylii - 31 total (14♂,17♀), 5 new, 26 recaptures
P. truei - 5 total (3♂,2♀), 1 new, 4 recaptures
N. fuscipes - 11 total (1 untagged animal was released without tagging), 11 recapture
Apparently, not all P. californicus enter traps early in the evening- a
major problem for dusting procedures.
0400- returned to the grid to search for POWDER left by dusted mice.
- Nothing! I could find the trail up to their escape spot, but nothing
after that. I tried to find the animals, no luck. It is still clear, but
a lot brighter than earlier. I sat on the grid from 0430 to 0515h-
not much activity audible. Only saw one P. boylii jumping
around station 10,5.
