The Bailey's are elderly - more
frail than I've seen them ever
before - the inevitable marks of time
Bailey told me his mammoals of
Oregon is due to appear "the
first of the year" - is now in galley
proof; says Chief Darling is actively
favorable to publishing, but wants
such reports more generally
interesting, in style of compilers,
to the public.
Then went to Natl Museum,
where most interesting conversations
were held with its various people
encountered. In mammal dept. saw
Shamel (asst) and Verit Miller;
latter looking fine, after last
year's serious illness. He
talked about tendencies toward
increase in size in mammals
leading "inevitably" to extinction.
I raised the question as to tendency
toward dwarfing leading in the
same direction. He thought so, too;
but "giantism" most fatal. He
could not cite any case I
reduction in size being shown
