Oct. 3 waterfowl need. forest on west slope of Cascades; impressive heavy; tall straight trees; horsey covers all ground (save sheer basaltic cliffs). At mid-altitude much lumbering. In foothills clearings and perhaps originally Grassland; glassland in farms begin; old lumber mills. Farms in run- down conditions; crops meager. Old orchards as we approach Eugene. Sparrow Hawk with moax, seen; 2 Helleurs; close flack of Cedar Waxwings. 1:30.— North toward Portland from Eugene; stubble-fields, pasture, farm-yards, some orchards. See Killdear (2 companies of 6 to 8); Crows (individuals); Meadowlark; Red-tailed Hawk; Sparrow Hawk. Thickly wooded hills rise here and there from the broad valley floor.
