May 12 D.C. 5/1 change of Oberholser. Picus Natalia Malherbe, Journ, für Orn., 1854, p. 171; from Mexico; this is a synonym for the Williamson Sapsucker. Dr. T.S. Palmer has just shown me Sutton, Vieillot, Gmelin, etc., when they treat of the Red-breasted Sapsucker. He agrees emphatically that ruber, flaviventris, troostensis all were based on Cook's bird from Northa Sound, and that daggetti is the only name usable for the southern race, from California. May 13. 10 a.m. - Wm. Palmer has just been talking with me. His interests now lie with Cetaceans. He says True was a very careless worker; published twice as much as he ought; papers full of errors.
