Inore 1831 Event Well 6030 ft R 15 E T 11 N Providence mts., Mohave Desert, San Bernardino Co., California May 27, 1931 had built homes. At Cima, 4204 ft., Joshua trees were found growing profusely, and the ground between the cactus was covered with dried wild greass and wild flowers of a great many forms. Arkansas Kingbirds were seen along the railroad, perched on the electric lights or telephone wires. From Cima we turned east and ran about four miles, passing through dense groves of Joshua trees, before we entered Cedar Canyon. Following up this canyon we arrived on a plateau where we found a government Bench mark "quintle alitude as 5867 ft. This plateau was covered with Artemesia and reminded me very much of the appearance of similar places in the Southern part of Nevada. Junipers and Pinyons dotted the hillside, and bird life was abundant. Five Mockingbirds were observed within an area of one square mile, and three others were heard singing within the same area. From the head of Cedar Canyon we turned south, going down Black Canyon. On a plateau at 5030 ft near Event Well we made camp. Mourning Doves flew around over head as we made camp and seemed almost unaware of our presence. Black throated Sparrows were abundant and one was shot that held a large, furry caterpillar in its beak.
