E.M.Brock 1958 Caribou 3 July 22 Pitt Point, Alaska we saw several large groups of caribou The larger groups consisted of 100-200 individuals while many small groups of 1,2 to about 25 were also seen. About 1000 caribou seen during this part of the flight. The flight after Cape Simpson (to Baranov) was at a much higher altitude with limited vision below due to a heavy fog. Aug 15 Wainwright, Alaska Flew from Baranov to Wainwright today and during the flight saw not more than 20 caribou. Groups varied from one, to three up to about eight. While at Wainwright, I watched a hunting party return and unload their oomiak of their take of 13 butchered caribou. They had been up the Kuke River. Aug 16 Another group of natives in an oomiak returned from the Kuke. This party had gotten 25 caribou. All were already butchered and skinned - the skins being on a meat pile. Aug 17 A third oomiak returned today with an untold amount of caribou.
