Caribou
1
June 25 Atkask, Mead River Coal Mine, Alaska
After leaving Barrow by bush plane,
I saw my first caribou for this season
when we were about fifteen miles north
of Mead River Coal Mine. The group
consisted of six animals.
While setting out transects VII and
VIII, I observed two adult caribou
followed by two calves trotting south
about .5 mile east of me. After they
traveled about a half mile more some
rifle shots were heard. One of the two
skinners now at the village, had shoot
it and then skinned it out. Since we
had not received any meat with our food
supply we went to make a bargain with
this fellow. For a five pound can of coffee
and about two pounds of sugar (those we
afford him) we received the hind quarters
of this calf caribou.
June 27 One lone, very white caribou seen on
tundra about five miles SE of Atkask.
Seen on tundra during one of our stops
on a boat trip up the Mead.
July 16 Pitt Point, Alaska
In morning, after checking traplines saw
an caribou. Tracks extremely abundant, many
animals must have been in the area.
