Lemmus
June 20 Barrow, Alaska
Not a single live lemming has been seen yet by me at Barrow. There are many signs on the tundra that show that the lemings were very abundant during the winter. In localized areas there are large amounts of hay and many lemming nests, some six feet apart (although this is the exception). Much clipped green grass with just a very small brown tip at the cut end is also present. It has been noticed that a large percentage of nest contain either dead lemmings, pieces of dead lemmings or lemmings hair. Also, a large percentage (really all) of the nests that have lemmings hair in them have weasel droppings next to them. In many instances the lemming's nest is very neatly lined by lemmings hair. A count has been started to see how many nests contain dead lemmings. So far, it appears that about one third of the available lemmings' nests have remains of lemmings in them and weasel droppings scattered nearly- about one foot from nest usually!

Lemming's nests with dead lemmings in them are also being found here at Dead River. One was found this morning with
