Raising of youngs
Litter 3
Aug 18 A.R.H, Barrow, northern Alaska
While I was away at Wainright, Ingrid Daysup was feeding my lemmings. On August 13 she heard young in one of the Lemnia and found three new-born young. The exact date of birth is not known.
On August 18 when I returned I looked at the young and weighed them. They are fully haired and their eyes are closed. Their weights are 8.9 g, 9.4 g and 10.1 grams.
Until their eyes open (if this can be used as somewhat of a criterion) I shall judge their date of birth to be about Aug 7 since they are fully haired which means about more than five days besides the fact that Ingrid observed them five days ago and yet less than twelve days since the eyes are closed which seems to take about twelve days. Their weights seem to be quite high for individuals that still have their eyes closed but this may be due to the fact that they are better nourished since there are only three as opposed to litters of six in the two other situations.
Aug 21 All three have their eyes open. I forgot to check on them yesterday but their
