Willow Bird
1957
Athasuk, Mead River Coal Mine, Alaska
June 14 A nest with one egg in it was found
in the willows across the meadow opposite
the mouth of the fresh water stream near
the village, that was about one foot off
the ground, built in among the willow
marches. Appeared to be a rebuilt nest
constructed of willow seed fiber and
lined with carbon hair. The bird was not
seen but the nest was still warm. Since the
nest is located right to one of my transects
(VI stack 9) I will probably collect the
eggs when the clutch is completed.
June 18 While setting out the trapline today I
noticed that the egg was very cold and the
nest moist from light rain - the nest is
very likely abandoned now.
June 19 While checking the trapline this morning,
I collected the nest and its one egg.
June 20 A female with a brood patch was caught
in trap at stack 1, 4 in transect VI. It
was later prepared as a study skin.
