Snowy Owl 2
Benow, Northern Alaska
When it flew due to my approach, it kept over the snow patches which follows track ridge and landed once again on the snowy area. This time it was very near to State Tract V. This may be the same owl seen yesterday. While this owl was in flight it was noticed that it was carrying something large. I investigated the area when I first saw the bird and found feathers, and just the digestive tract of a bird. From the feather it looks like a female pintail < Bill later stated it to be a Stellar Eider anyway it is a duck. Just like yesterday, today I again noticed that the owl is constantly followed by a whole flock of shorebirds. Upon closer investigation I found them to be about 50 spectral sandpipers some phalaropes. All the birds will perch about 50 feet from the owl or else fly back and forth always landing again close to the owl. When the owl moved all the birds got up and also moved.
The owl was not seen to feed on its catch but all the time just sat there first gazing in one direction then jerking its head in another direction and "staring" again
