Snowy Owl
Barrow, Northern Alaska
On my way out to check Transects I and II I saw a white spot to the west of the two lakes NE of Transects I and II. The owl was seated and being "dive bombed" by four common jaegers. A great number of shore birds also were in the immediate vicinity of the owl. After remaining in this location for about 10 minutes it flew fifty yards towards the lake and perched once again on the ground. Its flight was slow and close to the ground. One jaeger followed. After five minutes here it once again moved on about fifty more yards and perched on the ground. Here the jaeger dove on the owl again and again each time bearing its claws to the owl but never quite coming close enough. On most occasions the owl would "duck" the approaches of the jaeger. After about five minutes of these actions the owl flew to the other end across of the lake and perched on the ground.
