Arctic Tern
June 27
Atkausuk, Mead River Coal Mine, Alaska
A nest was discovered on a small mossy
island about 200 feet from the shore of
a pond about a half mile SE of transects
VII and VIII. About 200 feet from this
nest was the nest of a Sabine gull (see
space account). The tern's nest was very much
like the gulls' nest, consisting of a
depression in the mossy island and lined
with a few blades of grass. The nest had
one small greenish egg spotted with
brown. In contrast to the Sabine gulls'
action, the tern flew about high above
me not voicing any complaint while I
looked at its nest.
Within the area were northern and
red phalaropes, oldsquaws, dowitchers,
golden plovers and small sandpipers
(either Baird's or semi-palmated).
July 17
Pitt Point, Alaska
Tern nest found on island (about 150'x50')
in a lake about four miles SW of Pitt
Point or else about five miles east of
Drew Point. This island was also occupied
by 20 Sabine gull nests (see space account)
and one Pacific loon nest. The large island
was surrounded by deep (perhaps 10")
grassy water extending out about 200
