Red Phalarope
3
July 28
Barrow, Northern Alaska
While I was setting out line IV, I checked the location where the nest was located which was mentioned July 1. Naturally the nest was empty but about two inches away from the nest was a very young dead chick, probably 2-3 days old
No doubt it is a red phalarope chick and if so it died quite a few days previous to today when found.
July 29
Although I have not observed any flocks of red phalaropes recently, Dr. Johnson (Maine Oceanography) reported seeing large groups of phalaropes out at the point today.
