Red Phalarope
1
1957
June 12 Atkeasuk, Dead River Coal Mine, Alaska
A nest was discovered only after it
was too late and two of the eggs had
been destroyed by me in some fashion.
The nest was located between some
Eriophorum tussocks near stake 7.8
in transect number VIII. Of the
three eggs in the nest one was still in
good condition. This egg was collected
for the A.R.H. egg collection. The egg was
pear shaped, dark green and spotted
with many brown-black marks
July 1 Banow, within Alaska
Nest with 4 incubated eggs found
very near to stake 2.6 of line V
Was found when male (O? dull colored)
was flushed and flew directly out
over musk flat and landed far
off in the distance. No distraction
display of any sort. One of the four eggs
is turned in reverse with the tapered
end pointing out!
July 2 Nest was looked at is morning but bird
was not flushed or seen and eggs
seemed cold. All four eggs had the
tapered end in to the center. In the
evening the phalarope was seen
sitting on its nest
