Cape Simpson, Alaska
In the morning saw three birds near the
camp which I could not recognize. The
bill which was black seemed extremely
long. These three birds seemed to remain
in a group of three, all the time feeding
in the water. They seemed to
have long legs. They appeared like dunlins
in full plumage and yet they would
appear to look like pectoral sandpipers. I
therefore decided to collect a bird. The other
two remained in the area.
In the evening I decided to collect the
other two birds since I had decided that
it was not one of the birds seen
previously at Barrow. My equipment
for preparing study skins was left at
Barrow so that the birds would have to
be prepared at the lab. There were only 3 birds seen.

One of these same birds noticed in the field,
a whitish eye stripe is a prominent field
characteristic. About 3 or 4 seen here
associated with pectoral sandpipers.
