Pectoral Sandpiper
Atkasuke, Head River Co., Alaska
June 14 While I was checking Transect VII and
was close to stack 2, I saw a pectoral
sandpiper go into the broken wing act. After
about three quarters of an hour searching
I finally discovered the nest. During my
searching the bird continually went through
it broken wing act and rapidly walking
away in the opposite direction. At the same
time, though, the bird would take time
out to preen, feed and scratch itself,
thus not continually keeping up her act.
The nest contained four medium
sized, pear shaped, greenish colored
(with dark brown splotches) eggs arranged
in a circle with the tapered end in. The
nest was located on fairly dry sphagnum
surrounded by Eriophorum grass. The
nest was composed entirely of willow
leaves just laid down. Eggs were collected
June 30 Barrow, Northern Alaska
nest with four eggs found '1/2 north of
Transects V and VI. Nest is on beach
edge none of the eggs have hatched yet
July 1 All eggs still intact. Females goes into
broken wing act and dragging tail each time
I approach.
July 2 All 4 eggs still unhatched
