Great Blue Heron
Wainwright, Alaska
While I was walking through the village one of the eskimos called to me "Do you want to see a duck?" I said 'yes' being curious. He then added, 'I've never seen one like it.' I became interested and went to his hut. He went in and came out with a great blue heron, holding it by the head and laughing. After I overcame my surprise, I admired it and offered him two dollars for it. He gladly accepted the money and gave me the bird. He stated his name as Joe Aveoganna and said he had shot the bird 'day before yesterday' by the lagoon about five miles west of the village. I took the bird and placed it in an ice cellar to later take to Barrow. The bird was fresh when obtained and when prepared as a study skin back at the lab the bird seemed to be in good condition inside, so that the date the man gave me was probably correct. The bird turned out to be a female with the ovary measuring 25 mm x 8 mm, with the largest follicle being 2 mm. The bird was by no means thin yet did not have any excessive fat on it.
