M. Brock 1958 Aug 24 Pitmegea River, Cape Sabine, Alaska over the Kadak. At 1345 we passed over the Utakuk; shortly thereafter we saw a golden eagle in flight. Between the small river before the Kokalic and the Kokalic River we saw a melanistic wolf. Also seen was one long tailed jaeger. Airspeed was about 130-135 miles per hour. At 1435 we passed over the Kukoporak River and at 1450 we saw a grizzly bear. At 1500 we landed at Lis A for refueling. We landed at the Pitmegea at about 1545. I stayed at the Pitmegea with Jim Hardin while Hank went on with Britton, Brewer and Fisher to Kotzebue. I was to be picked up day after tomorrow. That afternoon I took a walk to the beach and west along the beach for about a mile and then back to camp over the tundra. At one location I turned over a rock and caught a shrew running out from under it. This animal was prepared as a stretch skin Aug 25 Took a walk upstream along the Pitmegea for about 2-3 miles. On this walk caught two Mice by hand and saw several more running about on the tundra. Also shot one whistler and one shrike.
