Aug 15 Wainwright, Alaska
encountered one old lady with a small
bucket and three for four small
children all gathering individual small
pieces of coal. The other two gatherers
were men who carried sacks.
Also observed was the return of a hunting
party. They landed at the beach with
their canoes loaded with 13 butchered
caribou.
When Merl Solomon arrived, he brought
with him a set of 53 traps which Bill
had been using, giving me four traplines.
Merl also brought along a large portion
of fresh caribou meat - fortunate since
I was given only a small supply of meat.
With Merl's help, we set out the four
traplines. No new lemmings sign to be
seen. A group of dowitchers and longspurs
were about, one snowy owl and a flight
of brant(?) seen going by. No jaegers in the
area.
One group of ducks seen flying east over
the shoreline, then later while I was at sunset
I a group of brant flew over my head (coming
from the south) flew out to the shore and also
flew east.
